On the name

Why a watch

An escapement is the part of a mechanical movement that releases stored energy in measured, repeating beats — turning raw power into precise time. We build companies the same way.

Every other part of a watch exists to serve one small one: the escapement, in gold here, which decides how much energy leaves and exactly when. A holding company has the same shape — capital and operations are gearing. Alex wears an Omega Speedmaster daily with a glass caseback, so that part is in plain sight on his wrist all day. The company is named after it.

Not a product — the argument. It keeps real New York time while it makes it, and the pushers work.

About

What we are

Escapement Technologies is a privately held company that builds and operates software products. We're small by design: a handful of focused tools, each engineered to do one thing exactly right. Founded in 2026 by Alex Thornton.

Founded by Alex Thornton
Founder & Operator

Alex brings seven years of engineering industry experience, building systems that have to work the first time. He holds an MS in electrical engineering from Columbia University, concentrating in signal processing and machine learning. He founded Escapement Technologies in Syracuse, New York to apply the same discipline to software — small, precise products that show their work, beginning with Teacher’s Bet.
